When it comes to cartoons in Bangladesh, nothing is as influential as is the magazine “Unmad”. I thought it would be inappropriate to put up any other cartoon other than the Unmad character himself as the first picture post. In case you don’t already know, ‘Unmad’ is the only cartoon magazine in our country (running since 1978 – which makes it a strong contender for the longest running magazine in our country!!) Over the last 30 years, the magazine has played an immense part to establish cartoons as a medium and cartoonists as artists in Bangladesh. The magazine is still running strong, credit for which goes to Ahsan Habib, the editor of the magazine since the mid 80s’. I met him twice; he has just the nerdy intellectual vibe that you would expect from a successful cartoonist. I checked the size of his head carefully, found nothing unusual, and left me wondering from where all the humor comes from.

In my childhood I would trade a pot of gold for the running issue of the magazine. It is still funny. Critics argue that the Unmad (meaning ‘mad’ in English) concept is not original, as it has indubitable similarities with the American satire magazine “Mad” (Unmad has no direct relations with the American counterpart). No one complains, for we are more than happy to have our own Desi version of “Mad”.
